What is Divorce Mediation?

Divorce mediation is a process where I help the couple identify and focus on resolving issues. I will not take sides, but will remain neutral and impartial. I will never substitute my judgment for yours, nor impose my judgment upon either side. I will facilitate a cooperative and non-hostile environment. Successful mediation requires open communication and the shared understanding of each spouses points of view, perspectives and needs. I will do my best to ensure that the negotiations are even-handed, with a level playing field, and that each spouses’ views are heard. I help motivate and guide the couple through a comprehensive discussion of each topic, giving them the information and encouragement necessary to resolve each disputed issue until a final marital settlement is reached.

Following the initial consultation, divorce mediation takes place in one and a half hour sessions, which are scheduled at mutually convenient times. The number of sessions are based upon the number of issues involved and the amount of time needed to resolve them. The couples’ commitment and dedication to the mediation process can shorten the time needed to resolve disputed issues.
